Nokia reveals another new Lumia smartphone in UK ad, teases ‘more than your eyes can see’ (video)

We’re still days away from Nokia’s London media event, but the company has apparently got a real taste for teasers. A new 20-second promo clip aired today in the UK, and although it doesn’t outline any outright specs or model numbers, we get a (very) up-close look at a dual-flash arrangement (unlike the xenon flash seen onVerizon’s Lumia 928), a glossy white shell and some metal detailing.

We’re relieved that Nokia has something new to unveil in the UK next week, but we’re now itching to hear exactly how this Windows Phone will differ from the now-public Lumia 928. We’ll have all the details on Tuesday morning.

Update: The Verge has managed to upload a digital copy of the ad. See it for yourself right after the break.

Nokia releases 3G network lock app for China Mobile’s Lumia 920T

I guess this is more about being funny than actually useful to most of you guys. Nokia just released an interesting app for Lumia 920T users on China Mobile. The app only does one thing: to lock the phone to either 3G or 2G network.

Lumia 920T

This may raise some eyebrows, since normally one could select what kind of network he wants in the system settings of Windows Phone 7 and 8. But no, that doesn’t apply to China Mobile’s Lumia 920T, which stays on 3G network by default. The 2G/3G/4G switch was removed by request of the carrier, probably in order to keep as many users on its 3G network as possible.

The lack of a network switch, combined with the carrier’s weird 3G network itself, resulted in a fair share of frustration. China Mobile runs its homegrown TD-SCDMA network for 3G, which surprisingly is not compatible with the GSM 2G network, which is supposed to be a global standard. Therefore all TD-SCDMA phones actually come with two separate cellular network modules, one for GSM, the other for TD-SCDMA. When a phone finds itself outside TD-SCDMA coverage, it will try to activate the GSM module. Frequent activating and deactivating of cellular modules eventually cause the phone to crash and reboot. The frustration is shared by a whole fleet of TD-SCDMA devices, not just Lumia 920T. I’ve heard the rebooting problem is particularly bad in rural area, where TD-SCDMA coverage has quite a lot to be desired.

With Nokia’s network locker app, a Lumia 920T owner could choose to just lock his phone to GSM. China Mobile enjoys epic GSM coverage which supposedly stretches all the way up to the top of Mount Everest. By staying away from TD-SCDMA, one effectively gets much more stable connectivity, therefore significantly reduced crash/reboot rate.

Although this is somewhat ironic, it still shows Nokia is working seriously on addressing local needs. This app now seems to be getting volleys of positive reviews and gratitudes in the Chinese facet of Windows Phone Store.

Nokia Lumia 620 now available in the U.S.

The Nokia Lumia 620 is an affordable, impressive entry level Windows Phones. We were impressed with the 3.8″ device (here’s our review) and it is now coming to the U.S. market.

Nokia Lumia 620

The not-so-good news of it all is that while the Lumia 620 is making an appearance in the U.S. market, it’s not with a major carrier.  The Lumia 620 is being offered by the relatively new wireless carrier Aio Wireless.

Unfortunately, for the time being, the Aio Wireless service is limited to the Tampa, Orlando, and Houston areas.  The company does have hopes to expand nationwide within the next year.  This may not be good news for those of us on other carriers or that live outside these limited markets. But it’s a start.

If you happen to be in one of the three Aio Wireless markets and are looking to make a switch, the Lumia 620 is running $179.99 (no annual contracts) with rate plans starting at $55.00 a month.  The Lumia 620 is being offered with the cyan shell but customers can exchange the cyan shell for violet, yellow or green shells at no cost at Aio Wireless retail stores.

You can find all the fine print on the Aio Wireless Nokia Lumia 620 here at the Aio Wireless website.

Life as Lions utilise Nokia Lumia 920 for Hollywood music video

Life as Lions is an up and coming rock band from Los Angeles, but the members are also major Windows Phone fans. The group decided when they moved from Houston to Los Angeles they would record the journey using their Lumia 920 smartphones and use the footage for a music video. The above is the end result.

Here’s a quick teaser for the band’s EP (again, shot with the Lumia 920):

Verizon Nokia Lumia 928 camera outed by ads: PureView, OIS, Carl Zeiss all along for the ride

Today brings yet another glimpse of the Nokia Lumia 928. Whether Nokia’s deliberately putting up billboards and magazine ads or they’ve lost control of their ad agency isn’t clear (we’d bet on the former), they’ve successfully managed to build up some buzz without saying anything official. Just today an ad for the Lumia 928 popped up in Vanity Fair, with a link to Nokia’s website for the image above.

Nokia Lumia 928

“Capture the highlights” the ad implores, and though the Nokia page doesn’t say anything about the phone’s name, the image’s file name certainly includes the phrase “Lumia-928″. While the Nokia page doesn’t spill any deets, the fine folks over at Engadget got a look at the ad in Vanity Fair (not really our rag; we’re more GQ and Vogue folks) and like the billboard from this weekend, it touts the Lumia 928′s low-light prowess. Verizon Nokia Lumia 928 reportedly spotted in the wild at a NYC event

The Nokia Lumia 928 has reportedly been seen in disguise in New York City during a private Nokia concert held for “social influencers, lifestyle and consumer media”. The Nokia Blog notes that numerous setups for recording video with supposed 928s in a thick black case was observed, and even a few Nokia folks had them closely guarded.

Nokia is believed to be announcing the mobile phone in the near future and should this report be accurate it can’t be long now.

While the hardware was disguised in cases, the website claims the Xenon flash was unmistakable. Looking at the shot below, it certainly looks like the renders we’ve covered in the past. Continue reading

Nokia updates Lumia Storage Check Beta app for Windows Phone with possible fixes

Nokia has rolled out an update for its Lumia Storage Check Beta app. This app, exclusively available for Nokia Windows Phones, enables consumers to monitor exactly what’s being stored on internal memory – something we believe Microsoft should have baked into the OS itself. So what’s new in this latest release?

Nokia updates Lumia

Nothing much, really. It’s only a minor bump in the build numbers (1.0.60.0) so we can assume we’re looking at small fixes and improvements. There were a number of reports of bugs and incompatibility issues with certain hardware (firmware version requirements in place). According to latest store reviews, the app still doesn’t work on the likes of the Lumia 822 and Lumia 820.  Continue reading

HSN’s order page for T-Mobile’s Lumia 521 goes live early
